PicLits - Express Your Creativity!

PicLits is a a fun website that will help you increase your vocabulary and practice your writing skills at the same time.

Go to PicLits and choose an image to write about. Each image has vocabulary lists to give you ideas.
  • Write as much as you can about the picture. What happened before the picture was taken? What is happening now? What will happen next? How does the picture make you feel? Does the picture remind you of anything or anyone?
  • You can write your composition in Microsoft Word or on notebook paper. Please write your composition double spaced, and include your name and a title.
  • Use an online dictionary like WordReference or your own dictionary to look up words you don't know.
  • Use description and detail!
You can also create picture compositions by dragging vocabulary words onto the picture. You will need to create an account if you want to share these picture compositions on Facebook or through e-mail.

Vocabulary Exercise #1

Today we will begin your vocabulary notebook (or flashcards) in class. After today it will be your responsibility to add at least five words a week, and I will check your progress regularly.

Each entry in your notebook (or each flashcard you create) should contain the following information: the word you want to learn, a short definition in English, a translation in your native language, and a short example.

These are sample entries.

Please visit VOA Special English and choose at least one article to read.
  • Choose five new vocabulary words and create entries for them in your vocabulary notebook. If you don't have a notebook yet, I will give you flashcards.
  • In the comments section below, please write your name and the name of the article you read. Did you like the article? Why or why not?
  • If you finish early, read another article! Reading is the most important thing you can do to increase your vocabulary.
